The WSO Stands with the Ukrainian People
The Waco Symphony Orchestra stands in solidarity with musicians of Ukrainian heritage and the people of Ukraine during this tragic war. The music community of Waco has a long and positive relationship with Ukrainian musicians, including such Waco Symphony guest artists as pianist Vadym Kholodenko. In 2000, the 175-member Kiev Symphony Orchestra and Chorus performed at Baylor University. Former Waco Symphony Association president W. Scott Livesay, M.D., along with nine other Waco medical professionals, underwrote the performance. As a tribute to the strength and courage of the Ukrainian people, we will open Saturday’s concert with a performance of Melody by distinguished Ukrainian composer Myroslav Skoryk. We say in the WSO’s mission statement that “Music transcends all national, racial, social, and economic barriers and serves as both a link to our past and a bridge to our future.” We dedicate Saturday’s concert in honor of the Ukrainian people. Our hearts and prayers are with them in their fight for freedom and democracy.
