When you think of a symphony orchestra, the guitar might not be the first instrument that comes to mind. But in the hands of Sharon Isbin, it takes center stage.
On Thursday, October 15, the multiple GRAMMY Award-winning guitarist joins the Waco Symphony for Rhythm & Radiance, bringing one of classical guitar’s most beloved works to Waco Hall.
A Guitarist Who Has Made History
Sharon Isbin has spent her career showing audiences how much a guitar can do.
She’s performed with more than 200 orchestras worldwide, appeared on some of the world’s most celebrated stages, and became the first guitarist to receive Musical America’s Instrumentalist of the Year award.
Her musical interests extend beyond classical music, too. From jazz and rock to music inspired by cultures around the world, Isbin has collaborated with an extraordinary range of artists while introducing new audiences to the classical guitar.
What Makes This Performance Special?
At Rhythm & Radiance, Isbin will perform Joaquín Rodrigo’s Concierto de Aranjuez, a concerto inspired by the gardens of a royal palace in Spain.
The piece brings the delicate sound of the guitar together with the power of a full orchestra. Its beautiful second movement is especially memorable, with a melody that has captivated audiences for generations.
Want a preview of Isbin’s artistry?
Watch her perform Aranjuez ma pensée, another work by Rodrigo, alongside guitarist Colin Davin. You’ll hear a beautiful example of the expressive sound she brings to the instrument.
